1097. Confusing Words – effect, affect

Sometimes two words are very similar and can be confusing. The words effect and affect are two of those confusing words.

The word effect is a noun. The result of something happening is the effect of that action.
The effect of rain is that things are wet. The effect of not studying is that you do poorly on a test.

The word affect is a verb. When you do an action, you affect the outcome of the situation.
I affect my dog in a negative way when I don’t take him for a walk.
Staying awake all night may affect your energy level the next day.

Use affect when showing action. Use effect when showing the result of the action. My action will affect you. You will suffer an effect as a result of my action.
