1091. Confusing Verbs – lie, lay

The verb lie sometimes means to tell an untruth. However, the verb lie also is used when talking about someone who no longer sits or stands – but rather the person lies down.
I will lie on my bed and rest today.
My cat likes to lie on the floor in the sunshine.
When a person or an animal can do the action on their own, we use the verb lie.

However, if someone places an object, then we use the verb lay.
Be sure to lay the blanket on the bed.
Mom will lay placemats on the table for dinner.

A person or an animal can lie down on their own. Whenever someone places an object, they lay the object down.
