1072. Confusing Contractions – they’re

The contraction they’re is made by pushing together two words: they are. When you join the two words into one, an apostrophe replaces the letter a in the word are.
they are = they’re
My folks said they are planning a trip.
My folks said they’re planning a trip.

Sometimes the contraction they’re gets confused with the words their and there. Remember, the contraction they’re really means they are. If you can’t read the sentence with the words they are, then you shouldn’t use the word they’re.
