A past tense verb tells action that happened before now. A past tense verb usually adds -ed to show that it is past tense. jump – jumped; help – helped
If a verb ends in an -e, you need only add a -d to make the verb past tense. Look at these examples:
bake – baked
fake – faked
paste – pasted
care – cared
Some single syllable verbs double their final consonant before adding -ed. Look at these examples:
skip – skipped
plan – planned
drip – dripped
hop – hopped
We often add -ed to verbs to show past tense. Sometimes we must add only a -d. Sometimes we must double the final consonant before adding -ed.
It’s your turn. Make these two present tense verbs into past tense verbs: skate; rub. That wasn’t too hard, was it?
